THCA Flower

When people think of hemp, they often think of products like tinctures, gummies, topicals, and more. However, hemp flower has become a niche within the industry that is gaining popularity every day. Hemp flower can be used in extraction, but some brands have focused on creating smokable hemp flower that meets consumers’ demands.

Looks Like Cannabis, But Still Is Hemp

People often envision cannabis when they think of smokable flower. However, hemp flower can be grown to smoke in much the same way. Hemp flower grown for smokable consumption is often grown in different conditions than hemp flower grown for extraction purposes. Many niche farmers will grow smokable hemp flower in small batches to ensure the quality of the end product.

Under the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp can possess up to .3% THC. While many strains of hemp flower are grown with a focus on high CBD production with low THC, some farmers focus on minor cannabinoid production, like THC-A, CBG, and other cannabinoids. In recent years, minor cannabinoid products have risen to consume a large share of the hemp market.

While federal regulations cover all US territory, individual states have their own hemp laws and regulations. Hemp programs that determine what products can be sold legally vary from state to state. What is THC-A?

THC-A is one of the cannabinoids that is developed from CBGA. CBGA is commonly nicknamed the “Mother of all Cannabinoids”. According to Leafly, “THCA is not intoxicating if ingested. Chemically, it has an additional molecular carboxyl ring, which prevents it from binding to receptors in the brain responsible for feeling high.”

This cannabinoid, when exposed to temperature, can become THC. THC, one of the most well-known cannabinoids, causes the “high” sensation many associates with hemp’s more sober sister, marijuana. Despite being closely related to THC, THC-A is its own unique cannabinoid.

Properties of THC-A

Like many other popular cannabinoids, THC-A offers its own unique properties. Modern research has allowed various teams from around the world to study individual cannabinoids to see how they can be used within the medical and scientific communities. THC-A in particular offers a diverse range of properties.

In a 2011 study, THC-A was found to have anti-inflammatory properties. This study was designed to overserve the effects of various cannabinoids to specifically identify if they had anti-inflammatory properties. Research such as this lays the ground work for more in-depth study in the future.

Additionally, in a 2017 study, THC-A was discovered to contain neuroprotective activity. According to the results published by the National Library of Medicine, “Δ9 -THCA shows potent neuroprotective activity, which is worth considering for the treatment of Huntington’s disease and possibly other neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory diseases.”

2020 research offered more insight into the properties of the THC-A cannabinoid. THC-A, in combination with several other cannabinoids, was found to have anti-nausea properties in male Sprague-Dawley rats. According to the findings of the study, the results were preliminary but offered new possibilities when dealing with chemotherapy-induced nausea.

Why THC-A Smokable Hemp Flower?

THC-A smokable hemp flower has been a popular growing niche within the last year. According to Kight on Cannabis, “These buds are intended for smoking or vaping. They contain high concentrations of tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCa) and low concentrations of D9. Specifically, their D9 levels do not exceed 0.3% by dry weight.”

This particular kind of hemp flower caters to a specific niche customer base while still remaining within federal legal bounds. State laws may differ, therefore it is encouraged to check with your state’s regulations before purchasing THC-A smokable hemp flower.
